‘"You're just not the hire we want"’: Restaurant general manager berates job seeker for 10 minutes straight during second interview, job seeker calls her ‘strange’ and walks out

  • "She unpacked so many toxic traits in a short period while I was there, silent just watching in awe.” RESUME
  • "Just survived the worst interview of my life for a server position where I got a 10 minute lecture about how I’m not the person they want"

I don't have any server experience to be fair, and I wasn't originally applying for server. I had applied for bartender, I recently finished a bartending
  • school. Now, I'm aware also that bartending school is an absolute joke in the restaurant industry and more likely to hold you in poor regard than good.
  • But in a two stage interview, a few days ago, me and the assistant manager clicked so well. We got along, not a missed beat, jokes, everything. She
  • mentioned first time bar hires aren't a thing they do but I could probably be a server and work up. She described the GM as 'neurotic and controlling'. Should've been my first red flag.
  • Today I was with the GM in an interview. She didn't smile once. Then gave me a 10 minute lecture of nonstop backhanded comments like "I'm a really honest and blunt person but
  • you're just not the hire we want and I'm not sure we will even call you back. I know what it's like to be in your shoes getting into this industry and it's hard to get your
  • first chance, so I get that, but also it would probably be a disaster having a first time server like you on our team". She unpacked so many toxic traits in a short period while I was there silent just watching in awe.
  • It was so hard to keep a straight face. 3 minutes in, I already knew I didn't want to work there. By the end, I called the interview strange and left.
  • With 2. Sakes 85
  • She even got defensive at that and said the most stereotypical "I'm just blunt and giving my real perspective it's not strange it's the truth" Anyone who says they're 'blunt' is full of sh lol.
  • Definitely not my vibe for a restaurant, doesn't feel like a place where people elevate one another. Just awful environment based off of the GM's attitude in that interview.
  • I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little discouraged.. but I think I can get a catering job as a bartender through the school's job placement program. Won't be the
  • same money without the tips, but it's the experience I'm looking for. But dang, I can't believe I just sat through 10 minutes of being ripped to shreds like that.
  • Joland7000 I wouldn't have sat through a one minute lecturing. I would have just said thank you for your time and walked out. There's no reason to treat applicants like they're sub-human. There's no reason to treat anyone like that. Consider yourself lucky
  • Junior_Delay_3817 that place sounds like a nightmare, and it's probably better you didn't get the job.
  • Equivalent_Post8035 I would have got up and walked out, she saw your resume, that you had no prior experience, so why waste your time to have you come in if she already had her mind set to not hiring you, fully knowing from your first interview and your resume that you didn't have the experience, did she just have you come in so she could sh on you, Imao?
  • F that noise, good luck OP I am sure you will find something soon and probably be at a much better place, with much better managers.
  • hooter1112 "You're not the hire we want" Why would they call you in for a second interview just to tell you this? I would have some choice words for her about wasting my time.
  • HuckleberryGlum1163 But listen, imagine having to hear that "bluntness "every day for 5 days a week. You dodged a bullet here
  • Fit_Bus9... I would've insulted her back. Then say your just being blunt and truthful. Walk out. I'm so tired of management with an attitude, that shouldn't even be working there. Toxic workers and management, they should be out the door. That's what I dealt with for many years. Will never deal with that again.
